She was ahead of her time and her influence can still be seen today. The author takes us through the years- with an interesting piece on Betty Davis- not to be confused with the actress- an artist I honestly have no memory of. I admit I love the girl groups from this era of time- so I really enjoyed this section- and agree the influence of these groups was huge- but is rarely acknowledged in the world of rock music. Girl groups such as ‘The Shirelles’ have been forgotten over the years. (Janis gave public credit to Thornton- while Elvis refused.) These women were influential outside of their work in the studio, as well.īig Mama Thornton – who recorded ‘Hound Dog’ before Elvis, and ‘Ball and Chain’ before Janis Joplin- never got her due, though she worked well into her old age. Often times, these women, whose music was often mislabeled as soul or R&B, never got the respect or recognition they deserved- and doubly so for those who made contributions to male dominated rock groups. I enjoyed this tribute to the black women who helped to shape rock music. ![]() Black Diamond Queens: African American Women and Rock and Roll by Maureen Mahon is a 2020 Duke University Press publication. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Read Tuchman's "A Distant Mirror" instead (I don't recommend trying to listen to it) for an informative, well researched, and well written account of the 14th century horrors (and there certainly were horrors!). Unfortunately, I also found the reader's voice and intonation nerve-scratching. Cantor's attempts at humor and shock tactics might work well in a classromm of freshmen or sophmores in a compulsory course, but provide no relief for someone choosing to read, or hear, the book. Further, the presentation of the factual material rarely breaks the surface and is more misleading than informative. Cantor's lack of perception regarding the Medieval period shines through! The "facts" that he presents are a hodge-podge of mostly old scholarship firmly entrenched in the "horrible Dark Ages" mentality. ![]() Kings of the Wyld by Nicholas Eames6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() I’ve judged it, and I’ve been found wanting…of this book! I’m sure there are readers out there who will argue that the saying is sound advice, but in the case of Kings of the Wyld by upcoming author Nicholas Eames…HOW CAN YOU NOT?!? I mean, look at it – IT LOOKS AWESOME! And it comes with high praise from none other than the fantasy giant John Gwynne (author of Malice, Velour, Ruin and Wrath – oh, and pun intended), which again, is on the cover. First things first, let’s get something out of the way: the saying ‘don’t judge a book by its cover,’ well, sometimes you can’t help it. ![]() Before I Had the Words by Skylar Kergil6/25/2023 ![]() ![]() I’m sorry to read of what happened to you, and though it’s good to hear that the attacker was sentenced, indeed nothing undoes the physical and psychological effects from it.
